Resumo: On November 05, 2015an environmental accident occurred with the spillage of mining tailings along the “Rio Doce”, in an extension that runs approximately 43 municipalities of the states of “Minas Gerais” and “Espírito Santo”, causing enormous social, environmental and economic losses that affected the life of the inhabitants of this region. This environmental disaster occurred 2,8 kilometers from the district of “Bento Rodrigues” in the municipality of “Mariana” in “Minas Gerais”, by the collapse of the Samarco company's "Fundão" dam. As the consequences have not yet been fully measured, this research aimed to carry out a preliminary investigation on the urban implications of this environmental disaster, verifying the vulnerabilities that this type of accident promotes, as well as the socioeconomic impacts. The analysis was based on the general mapping of the valley, the population survey, of part of the historical and environmental heritage, the comparison of the IDHM (Municipal Human Development Index) of the affected urban centers and the identification of the mesoregions and microregions covered, studying the landscape before and after the disaster in the towns supplied by the river. After regional analysis, it was concentrated more in the municipalities of Barra Longa (MG), Mariana (MG) and Governador Valadares (MG), elected as typical cases, but without losing articulation with the rest of the valley.
