INFLUENCE OF PERSONALITY VARIABLES ON INTENTION OF PERFORMING BREAST SELF EXAMINATION

Resumo: In a study about Breast Self Examination (BSE) based onthe Theory of Planned Action (Ajzen, 1985, 1988), seventy women agedbetween 20 and 60 years answered a questionnaire about BSE and twoscales, one on body image and the other measuring their degree ofemotionality x rationality. Women who had jobs and a higher levei ofeducation presented a more favorable body image. No significam relationshipswere found between the three measures. Questionnaire resultsconfirmed the data obtained on two previous studies on the subject usingthe same model. The influence of normative beliefs and the subjectivenorm, on behavioral intention, was present in ali three studies: their resultsare compaired and discussed.

The influence of normative beliefs and the subjectivenorm, on behavioral intention, was present in ali three studies: their resultsare compaired and discussed.Em um estudo acerca do Auto Exame da Mama (AEM), baseado na Teoria da Ação Planejada (Ajzen, 1985,1988), setenta mulheres, com idade de 20 a 60 anos, responderam a um questionário sobre o AEM e a duas escalas, uma sobre a imagem corporal e a outra medindo onível de racionalidade-emocionalidade. As mulheres cujo nível de escolaridade era mais alto e as que trabalhavam fora apresentaram uma imagem mais favorável. Nenhuma relação significativa foi encontrada entre as três medidas utilizadas. Os resultados do questionário sobre a AEM confirmaram os dados obtidos em dois estudos anteriores sobre este tema, utilizando o mesmo modelo.
