Resumo: The article endorses a view of gender as structure. As such, gender hierarchy belongs to the dominion of the symbolic and lies somewhere beneath the observable reality that provides materials for the work of the ethnographer. Gender structures reality, imprinting in it the organization of an originary scene usually transposed into the terms of family relationships. Within this perspective, the author can only envisage one outlet from the hierarchical circle of power and subjected desire: to disclose the usual — though generally masked — circular dynamics of androgyny that is an ordinary part of the experience of social sujects.

Le genre structure la realité, en y imprimant Torganisation d’une scene originaire qui se transpose en termes de rapports familiaux. A partir de cette perspective, I 'auteur n 'envisage qu’une sortie du cercle hiérarchique du pouvoir et de la soumission du désir: révéler la dynamique, usuelle — même si généralemente masquée — de I’androgynie en tant que circulation, ce qui fait partie de I’experience ordinaire des sujets sociaux.O artigo endossa a abordagem do gênero como estrutura. Assim, a hierarquia de gênero pertence ao domínio do simbólico e reside em algum lugar da realidade observável com a qual o etnógrafo trabalha. O gênero estrutura a realidade, imprimindo nela a organização de uma cena originária e transportando-a, usualmente, para os termos das relações familiares.
