Resumo: | The objective is to point out the reasons for the acceleration of technological changes in sugarcane plantations by sugar-energy companies in São Paulo after 2007, in particular the replacement of manual cutting by mechanical cutting with the elimination of burning, and to analyze its effects on occupation in the sector. Competitive strategies and worker control strategies have been defined. Data from the Ministry of Labor and Employment is used to measure the evolution of formal employment in the sugar-energy sector by occupational group until 2019. Faced with a favourable situation and good prospects in the ethanol market, in 2007, companies in the sector increased their spending on sugarcane mechanization, which was less intense among sugarcane farmers. As the situation worsened in 2010, several companies closed down and concentration in the sector increased. The composition of occupations changed, with a reduction in unskilled agricultural workers and an increase in administrative, transportation and support workers. The control of agricultural work has changed, with payment by production being replaced by the use of georeferencing, information technology and communication. |
