An epidemic outbreak in a socio-demographic perspective: the case of the Spanish flu in the city of Córdoba, Argentina (1918-1919)

Resumo: This study proposes to examine the incidence of the bloodiest pandemic of the 20th century in a city in the interior of Argentina. The so-called “Spanish flu” came in two stages, during 1918 and 1919, generating particular socio-demographic configurations. Based on a quantitative and qualitative approach, anchored in official journalistic and statistical sources, our inquiry aims to put in perspective the case of the city of Córdoba, in the central region of the country, that would show specific features. We are interested in analyzing the development of the disease from two perspectives: the impact by age and sex and the development of the disease in spatial terms, having as a hypothesis that there would be a correlation between geographical distribution and levels of poverty, and sanitary conditions, analysis that will be developed only for the second wave, because it had a greater impact in terms of mortality.

La denominada “grippe española” sobrevino en dos etapas, durante 1918 y 1919, generando configuraciones socio-demográficas particulares. A partir de un abordaje cuanti-cualitativo, anclado en fuentes periodísticas y estadísticas oficiales, nuestra indagación pretende colocar en perspectiva el caso de la ciudad de Córdoba, en la región central del país, que mostraría rasgos específicos. Analizamos el desarrollo de la enfermedad considerando dos variables clave: el impacto por edad y sexo y su desarrollo en términos espaciales.
