Antibacterial activity of Lippia sidoides Cham against periodontopathogens: an in vitro study

Resumo: | The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of essential oil from Lippia sidoides Cham, against Aggregatibacter actinomycetecomitans ATCC 29522 and Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 0644. The antimicrobial activity of L.sidoides Cham oil extracted from leaves and flowers and the constituents thymol and carvacrol through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal determination (CBM) against periodontopathogens Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (ATCC), Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC ). Te results revealed that the MIC recorded was 44.23 to 39.3 mg/mL for thymol and 28.45 to 28.15 mg/mL for carvacrol. These concentrations were considered bactericidal when CBM was evaluated. All analyzed substances showed a synergistic effect in association with chlorhexidine. Thus, it can be concluded that Lippia sidoides Cham was effective in inhibiting the in vitro growth of periodontopathogenic bacteria, presenting, therefore, biotechnological potential for use in the field of dentistry. |

La actividad antimicrobiana del aceite de L.sidoides Cham extraído de hojas y flores y los constituyentes timol y carvacrol a través de la Concentración mínima inhibitoria (MIC) y determinación bactericida mínima (MBC) frente a los periodontopatógenos Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (ATCC), Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC). Resultados: revelaron que la CIM registrada fue de 44,23 a 39,3 mg/mL para timol y de 28,45 a 28,15 mg/mL para carvacrol. Estas concentraciones se consideraron bactericidas cuando se evaluó el CBM. Todas las sustancias analizadas mostraron un efecto sinérgico en asociación con la clorhexidina. Por lo tanto, se puede concluir que Lippia sidoides Cham fue eficaz para inhibir el crecimiento in vitro de bacterias periodontopatógenas, presentando, por tanto, potencial biotecnológico para su uso en odontología.O objetivo dessse estudo foi avaliar a susceptibilidade antimicrobiana do óleo essencial da Lippia sidoides Cham, frente a Aggregatibacter actinomycetecomitans ATCC 29522 e Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 0644. Resultados: revelaram que a CIM registrado foi de 44,23 a 39,3 mg/mL para o timol e 28,45 a 28,15 mg/mL para carvacrol. Estas concentrações foram consideradas bactericidas quando a CBM foi avaliada. Todas as substâncias analisadas apresentaram efeito sinérgico em associação com a clorexidina.
