Books, reading and printed materials for primary schools of Rio Grande do Norte (1910-1930) in Brazil

Resumo: This work aims to highlight books, reading and printed materials used for primary schools in the State of Rio Grande do Norte-Brazil from 1910 to 1930. The research is based in the scientific area of Cultural History and in particular, in the practices and representations, according to Chartier (1990), as well as in the area of History of Reading, by Manguel (1996). The methodology was based on documental research that considered the collection from the Public Archive of the State of Rio Grande do Norte and in the Historical and Geographical Institute of Rio Grande do Norte in Natal-Brazil. As core texts for this analysis the research considered printed textbooks and such as the Cartilha de Ensino Rápido da Leitura by Mariano de Oliveira (1940) and Leituras Potiguares by Antonio Fagundes (1933), the first text book to be adopted in various schools in the State. On one hand, these materials showcase the kind of reading sources used at the time as well as point out the kind of recommendations from the State´s General Direction of Public Instruction, known later on as Board of Education, institutions responsible for reading indications in schools. It is possible to conclude that regarding the literate society, these books, reading and printed material contributed for literacy issues in primary schools.

Se fundamenta en la Historia Cultural, en particular en las prácticas y representaciones, postuladas por Chartier (1990) , como también en la historia de la lectura, de Manguel (1996). En lo que se refiere a la metodología, realizamos una investigación documental en el Archivo Público del Estado de Rio Grande do Norte-APE / RN y en el Instituto Histórico y Geográfico de Rio Grande do Norte / IHGRN. (1940), y las Lecturas Potiguares, de Antonio Fagundes (1933), primer libro didáctico de la literatura norteamericana, y que se trataba de textos fundantes: cartillas y materiales didácticos impresos, a ejemplo de la Cartilla de Enseñanza Rápida de la Lectura, de Mariano de Oliveira (1940) -grandense adoptado en diversas instituciones escolares. Estos materiales demuestran, por un lado, los soportes de lectura utilizados por los norte-rio-grandenses, así como las recomendaciones de la Dirección General de Educación Pública, posteriormente Dirección de Educación, sobre los materiales a ser adoptados en Rio Grande do Norte. Se concluye que, en lo que se refiere a la formación de la sociedad letrada, en dicho estado los libros, lecturas e impresos tuvieron contribuciones para su difusión a partir de las escuelas primarias. Este trabalho tem por objetivo evidenciar os livros, leituras e impressos utilizados na Escola Primária do Rio Grande do Norte, entre as décadas de 1910 e 1930. Fundamenta-se na História Cultural, em particular nas práticas e representações, postuladas por Chartier (1990), como também na história da leitura, de Manguel (1996). No que toca à metodologia, realizamos uma pesquisa documental no Arquivo Público do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte-APE/RN e no Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Rio Grande do Norte/IHGRN. Constituem-se como textos fundantes: cartilhas e materiais didáticos impressos, a exemplo da Cartilha de Ensino Rápido da Leitura, de Mariano de Oliveira (1940), e Leituras Potiguares, de Antônio Fagundes (1933), primeiro livro didático da literatura norte-rio-grandense adotado em diversas instituições escolares. Estes materiais demonstram, por um lado, os suportes de leitura utilizados pelos norte-rio-grandenses, bem como as recomendações da Diretoria Geral de Instrução Pública, posteriormente Diretoria de Educação, sobre os materiais a serem adotados no Rio Grande do Norte.
