Aging from the standpoint of the elderly: a phenomenological approach

Resumo: Objectives: to understand how the elderly mean their transformations in relation to temporality and the ontological condition of being-elderly. Methodology: Exploratory-descriptive, qualitative study, according to the presuppositions of the phenomenological approach in Heidegger. Results: Fifteen elderly, 11 females and 4 males, aged between 61 and 89 years, all retired, were interviewed. Most of them live with relatives and are illiterate. The results extracted from the speeches revealed the following units of meaning: 1- Recognizing the elderly in their existentiality; 2 - Being in the world as an old man; 3- The aging and the having-to-be for death. Conclusion: The understanding of aging under the perception of the elderly, so that their real needs are known and consequently they can intervene in an effective way, generating quality of life. Thus, it is necessary to reconsider the way of treating the elderly, as well as the assistance provided in the health and society as a whole.

Metodología: Estudio exploratorio-descriptivo, cualitativo, de acuerdo con las presuposiciones del enfoque fenomenológico en Heidegger. Resultados: Fueron entrevistados 15 ancianos, 11 del género femenino y 4 del género masculino, entre 61 y 89 años, todos jubilados. La mayoría vive con familiares y son analfabetos. Los resultados extraídos de las palabras desvelaron las siguientes unidades de significado: 1- Si reconociendo anciano en su existencialidad; 2- Existiendo en el mundo como anciano; 3- El envejecimiento y el tener de ser para la muerte. Conclusión: La comprensión del envejecimiento bajo la percepción del propio anciano, para que sean conocidas sus reales necesidades y consecuentemente se pueda intervenir de manera efectiva, generando calidad de vida. De esta forma, es necesario reconsiderar la manera de tratar al anciano, así como la asistencia prestada en el ámbito de la salud y en la sociedad como un todo.Objetivos: compreender como os idosos significam suas transformações frente a temporalidade e a condição ontológica de Ser-idoso. Metodologia: Estudo exploratório-descritivo, qualitativo, de acordo com as pressuposições da abordagem fenomenológica em Heidegger. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 15 idosos, 11 do gênero feminino e 4 do gênero masculino, entre 61 e 89 anos, todos aposentados. A maior parte vive com familiares e são analfabetos. Os resultados extraídos das falas desvelou as seguintes unidades de significado: 1- Se reconhecendo idoso em sua existencialidade; 2- Existindo no mundo como idoso; 3- O envelhecimento e o ter-de-ser para a morte. Conclusão: A compreensão do envelhecimento sob a percepção do próprio idoso, para que sejam conhecidas suas reais necessidades e consequentemente se consiga intervir de maneira efetiva, gerando qualidade de vida.
