Summary: | The quality of semen samples is extremely important for the success of artificial insemination programs in cattle. Thus, it is essential to maintain the characteristics of spermatozoa through an adequate cryopreservation process. However, cryopreservation processes result in the continuous and excessive formation of reactive oxygen species (EROS), which are harmful to sperm, as it induces apoptosis with a consequent reduction in sperm quality. Thus, cryoprotectants have been added to antioxidant substances such as glutathione and melatonin which aim to minimize the deleterious effects caused by EROS to sperm, resulting in better sperm quality, with a consequent increase in in vitro fertilization rates. Therefore, the present review aims to analyze the effects of the addition of antioxidants glutathione and melatonin in different media of cryopreservation and in vitro production of bovine embryos. |

Por lo tanto, es esencial mantener las características de los espermatozoides a través de un proceso de crioconservación apropiado. Sin embargo, los procesos de crioconservación dan como resultado la formación continua y excesiva de especies reactivas de oxígeno (EROS), que son perjudiciales para los espermatozoides, ya que inducen la apoptosis con la consiguiente reducción en la calidad de los espermatozoides. Por lo tanto, se han agregado crioprotectores a sustancias antioxidantes como el glutatión y la melatonina que tienen como objetivo minimizar los efectos nocivos causados por EROS al esperma, lo que resulta en una mejor calidad del esperma, con el consiguiente aumento de las tasas de fertilización in vitro. Por lo tanto, la presente revisión tiene como objetivo analizar los efectos de la adición de antioxidantes glutatión y melatonina en diferentes medios de criopreservación y producción in vitro de embriones bovinos.A qualidade das amostras de sêmen é fundamental para o sucesso dos programas de inseminação artificial em bovinos. Torna-se imprescindível a manutenção das características dos espermatozoides por meio de adequado processo de criopreservação. No entanto, os processos de criopreservação resultam na formação contínua e excessiva de espécies reativas de oxigênio (EROS), que são prejudiciais aos espermatozoides, pois induz a apoptose com consequente redução da qualidade espermática. Dessa forma, têm sido acrescidos aos crioprotetores substâncias antioxidantes como a glutationa e a melatonina, as quais tem como intuito minimizar os efeitos deletérios causados pelas EROS aos espermatozoides, resultando em melhor qualidade espermática, com consequente aumento das taxas de fertilização in vitro.
