Natural products used in the prevention and/or relief of COVID-19 symptoms: a review

Resumo: Objective: To perform an integrative review about the consumption of medicinal plants and/or natural products for the prevention and relief of symptoms of COVID-19. Methodology: This work is an Integrative Literature Review, in which scientific papers were searched that relate ethnopharmacological studies and prevention and/or relief of symptoms of COVID-19, through the use of natural products, for which the following descriptors were used: Covid 19, natural products, medicinal plants and health. Results: Fifty papers were selected, and through inclusion and exclusion criteria, 32 scientific papers remained. The plant species cited were: Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (licorice), Allium sativum L. (garlic), Mikania glomerata Spreng (guaco), Peumus boldus (boldo), Matricaria chamomilla (chamomile), Eucalyptus globulu (eucalyptus), Zingiber officinale (ginger), Mentha spicata (mint), Mangifera indica (mango). The antiviral and anti-inflammatory activities were the most found. Conclusion: This literature review evidences the existence of ethnopharmacological studies that prove the use of natural products in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 symptoms. In addition, it is noticeable the significant increase in studies with natural products in the search for cure, prevention or treatment for COVID-19 as well as its popular use.

Metodología: Este trabajo se trata de una Revisión Integrativa de la Literatura, en la que se han investigado los trabajos científicos que relacionan los estudios etnofarmacológicos con la prevención y/o alivio de los síntomas de la COVID-19, mediante el uso de productos naturales, para lo que se han utilizado los siguientes descriptores: Covid 19, productos naturales, plantas medicinales y salud. Resultados: Se seleccionaron 50 trabajos, que mediante criterios de inclusión y exclusión quedaron 32 trabajos científicos, las especies vegetales citadas fueron: Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (regaliz), Allium sativum L. (ajo), Mikania glomerata Spreng (guaco), Peumus boldus (boldo), Matricaria chamomilla (manzanilla), Eucalyptus globulu (eucalipto), Zingiber officinale (jengibre), Mentha spicata (menta), Mangifera indica (mango). Las actividades antiviral y antiinflamatoria fueron las más encontradas. Conclusión: Esta revisión bibliográfica evidencia la existencia de estudios etnofarmacológicos que prueban el uso de productos naturales en la prevención y el tratamiento de los síntomas del COVID-19. Además, es notable el aumento significativo de los estudios con productos naturales en la búsqueda de la cura, la prevención o el tratamiento de la COVID-19, así como su uso popular.Objetivo: Realizar uma revisão integrativa acerca do consumo de plantas medicinais e/ou produtos naturais para prevenção e alívio dos sintomas de COVID-19. Metodologia: Este trabalho trata-se de um Revisão Integrativa de Literatura, em que foram pesquisados trabalhos científicos que relacionem estudos etnofarmacológicos e prevenção e/ou alívio de sintomas da COVID-19, através do uso de produtos naturais, para tanto foram utilizados os seguintes descritores: Covid 19, produtos naturais, plantas medicinais e saúde. Resultados: Foram selecionados 50 trabalhos, que por meio de critérios de inclusão e exclusão ficaram 32 trabalhos científicos, às espécies vegetais citadas foram: Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (alcaçuz), Allium sativum L. (alho), Mikania glomerata Spreng (guaco), Peumus boldus (boldo), Matricaria chamomilla (camomila), Eucalyptus globulu (eucalipto), Zingiber officinale (gengibre), Mentha spicata (hortelã), Mangifera indica (mangueira).Além das espécies vegetais foram citados: Própolis de Apis mellifera L. (própolis), óleos essenciais, aromaterapia, vitaminas e minerais. As atividades antivirais e anti-inflamatórias foram as mais encontradas. Conclusão: Esta revisão de literatura evidencia a existência de estudos etnofarmacológicos que comprovam a utilização de produtos naturais na prevenção e tratamento dos sintomas de COVID-19.
