Noise reduction algorithm in hearing aids: influence on speech recognition in noisy environment

Resumo: Purpose: To verify the influence of the noise reduction algorithm on speech recognition of adults and elderly users of hearing aids. Method: Cross-sectional study conducted with 18 years or older individuals with sensorineural hearing loss, referred for hearing aids fitting. It was used the List of Sentences in Portuguese test in an acoustically treated cabin under two conditions: noise reduction algorithm on and off. Results: There was an improvement in the Signal-to-Noise ratio in the condition of noise reduction on compared to noise reduction off (p = 0.043). Regarding the Speech Recognition in Noise Index, no statistically significant differences were observed. Two variables were defined: ΔSNR and ΔSRNI. ΔSNR is the difference between the Signal-to-Noise ratio with noise reduction off and on, while ΔSRNI is the difference between Speech Recognition in Noise Index with noise reduction on and off. An increase in ΔSNR is related to a worsening of ΔSRNI. Conclusion: The Signal-to-Noise ratio improved with the use of the noise reduction. However, this was not verified for the SRNI. In addition, an inverse relationship between ΔSNR and ΔSRNI was observed, implying that an improvement in Signal-to-Noise ratio may compromise the speech recognition in noise.

Método: Estudio transversal realizado con individuos de 18 años o más, con pérdida auditiva neurosensorial, orientados para protetización. Para la evaluación se utilizó la evaluación Lista de Sentenças em Português, en cabina acústicamente tratada, en dos condiciones: con el algoritmo de reducción encendido y apagado.  Resultados: La muestra está compuesta por 38 individuos. Se observó una mejora en la relación entre señal-ruido en la condición del reductor de ruido encendido en comparación al apagado (p = 0,043). En cuanto al Umbral de Recepción del Habla en el ruido, no se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas. Se definió dos variables: ΔS/R y ΔIPRSR. El ΔS/R es la diferencia entre la relación señal/ruido con el reductor de ruido apagado y encendido, ya el ΔIPRSR es la diferencia entre el Índice de Porcentaje de Reconocimiento del Habla en el Ruido con el reductor de ruido apagado y encendido. Se observó que un aumento en el ΔS/R está relacionado a un empeoramiento del ΔIPRSR. Conclusión: La relación entre señal-ruido presentó un mejoramiento con la utilización del algoritmo, sin embargo, lo mismo no fue identificado para el Índice de Porcentaje de Reconocimiento del Habla en el Ruido. Además, se observó una relación inversa entre ΔS/R y ΔIPRSR, lo que indica que mayores relaciones entre Señal-Ruido pueden comprometer el reconocimiento del habla en el ruido.Objetivo: verificar a influência do algoritmo de redução de ruído no reconhecimento de fala no ruído em adultos e idosos, usuários de AASI. Método: Estudo transversal realizado com indivíduos de 18 anos ou mais, com perda auditiva neurossensorial, encaminhados para protetização. Para a avaliação utilizou-se o teste Lista de Sentenças em Português, em cabine acusticamente tratada, em duas condições: com o algoritmo de redução de ruído ligado e desligado. Resultados: A amostra é composta por 38 indivíduos. Observou-se uma melhora da relação sinal-ruído na condição do redutor de ruído ligado comparado ao desligado (p = 0,043). Quanto ao Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Ruído, não foram observadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas. Foram definidas duas variáveis: ΔS/R e ΔIPRSR. O ΔS/R é a diferença entre a relação sinal ruído com o redutor de ruído desligado e ligado, já o ΔIPRSR é a diferença entre o Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Ruído com redutor de ruído ligado e desligado. Observou-se que um aumento no ΔS/R está relacionado a uma piora do ΔIPRSR. Conclusão: A relação Sinal-Ruído apresentou melhora com a utilização do algoritmo, no entanto, o mesmo não foi verificado para o Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Sentenças no Ruído.
