Nicotine poisoning in dogs: literature review

Resumo: | Nicotine is a substance found in tobacco and its derivatives, with few reports in the literature related to intoxication in dogs. Toxicosis in the species can occur due to the proximity to humans, especially with smoking tutors, making contact with this substance inevitable. The present work aims to make a bibliographic review on nicotine poisoning in dogs. For the study, a search for articles indexed in the scientific bases PubMed, SciELO, portal of CAPES and Scopus journals was carried out, in the time frame from 1998 to 2020, using the following descriptors: dogs, nicotine, tobacco and intoxication. From the studies listed, the following results were obtained: which products derived from nicotine were more described in the literature, their lethal dose and the clinical signs related to toxicosis. It was concluded that nicotine is a very dangerous substance for dogs and that despite its severity, there are few studies on clinical and emergency approaches in cases of nicotine poisoning. |

La toxicosis en la especie puede ocurrir debido a la proximidad con los humanos, especialmente con los tutores fumadores, haciendo inevitable el contacto con esta sustancia. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre la intoxicación por nicotina en perros. Para el estudio se realizó una búsqueda de artículos indexados en las bases de datos científicas PubMed, SciELO, portal de revistas CAPES y Scopus, en el marco temporal de 1998 a 2020, utilizando los siguientes descriptores: perros, nicotina, tabaco e intoxicación. De los estudios enumerados se obtuvieron los siguientes resultados: qué productos derivados de la nicotina estaban más descritos en la literatura, su dosis letal y los signos clínicos relacionados con la toxicosis. Se concluyó que la nicotina es una sustancia muy peligrosa para los perros y que, a pesar de su gravedad, existen pocos estudios sobre enfoques clínicos y de emergencia en casos de intoxicación por nicotina.A nicotina é uma substância encontrada no tabaco e seus derivados, apresentando poucos relatos na literatura relacionados à intoxicação em cães. A toxicose na espécie pode ocorrer devido à proximidade com humanos, principalmente com tutores fumantes, tornando-se inevitável o contato com essa substância. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo fazer uma revisão bibliográfica sobre intoxicação por nicotina em cães. Para o estudo foi realizado a pesquisa de artigos indexados nas bases científicas PubMed, SciELO, portal de periódicos CAPES e Scopus, no recorte temporal de 1998 a 2020, utilizando-se os seguintes descritores: cães, nicotina, tabaco e intoxicação. A partir dos estudos elencados obteve-se como resultados: quais produtos derivados da nicotina foram mais descritos na literatura, a sua dose letal e os sinais clínicos relacionados à toxicose.
