Perception of body image and nutritional status of children in a public and private school in Fortaleza-CE

Resumo: Objectives: To associate the perception of children’s body image with their nutritional status in a public and private school in Fortaleza-CE.Methodology: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 247 students aged 7 to 10 years of both sexes. The anthropometric evaluation and the analysis of body image perception were performed through the application of the silhouettes scale.Results: The private school showed higher rates of obesity, with the male sex (46%). Regarding the distortion of body image among schools, high and similar percentages were found, with emphasis on private school (78%) and emphasis on boys, where they underestimated their image. In the dissatisfaction the private school obtained the highest indices (90%), with predominance also in boys. It was found that the majority of the unsatisfied sample wanted to have a smaller silhouette (58%), and hat in private school the highest indices of dissatisfaction were pertinent to overweight boys (52%).Conclusions: The private school showed higher rates of obesity, with the male sex (46%). Foi realizada a avaliação antropométrica e a análise da percepção da imagem corporal, através da aplicação da escala de silhuetas.Resultados: A escola privada apresentou maiores índices de obesidade destacando o sexo masculino (46%). Em relação à distorção da imagem corporal entre as escolas, obtiveram-se percentuais elevados e semelhantes, com destaque para a escola particular (78%) e ênfase nos meninos, os quais subestimavam sua imagem. Na insatisfação, a escola privada obteve os maiores índices (90%), com predominância também nos meninos. Constatou-se que a maior parte da amostra insatisfeita desejava ter uma silhueta menor (58%) e que, na escola privada, os maiores índices de insatisfação eram pertinentes aos meninos com excesso de peso (52%).Conclusões: Há indícios de distorção e insatisfação corporal em ambos os sexos e escolas, com enfoque no gênero masculino, e os níveis de insatisfação sobressaem nos indivíduos com excesso de peso.
