Resumo: The main aim of this paper is to verify the level of competitiveness of Brazilian states byestablishing a ranking using socioeconomic variables to know the potentialities, weaknessesand opportunities for their development. To reach this purpose, the technique of principalcomponent factor analysis was used. From procurement of factors, we created an index ofcompetitiveness of the states of Brazil - ICE. The ICE identified the states of the Southeastand South regions as the most competitive while those belonging to the North and Northeastregions were classified in the worst position in competitiveness ranking.
