Resumo: This study aimed to assess the level of importance and proficiency in individual competencies required for project management in a Brazilian public health institution. The research employed an exploratory approach, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative methods. Competencies identified from the theoretical framework were analyzed using content analysis and described in the form of observable behaviors, resulting in a total of 48 competencies. Subsequently, a questionnaire was administered to 18 strategic project managers within the institution, and based on their self-assessment, the priorities for competency development were established using the Training Needs Index [TNI]. The participants regarded all presented competencies as highly important for their professional performance. Furthermore, the results indicated that the managers possessed a high level of professional qualification for project management. However, the focus of development efforts should be directed towards specific competencies gaps identified in some managers, particularly related to cost management, scope, procurement and contracting, and communication. The research contributes to the enhancement of project management competencies among the institution's project managers and advances the discussion on competencies required for public health project management.

The research contributes to the enhancement of project management competencies among the institution's project managers and advances the discussion on competencies required for public health project management.
