PERCEPTION OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES REGARDING SUSTAINABLE PORT PRACTICES

Resumo: | The positive perception of the port cluster by the local communities is a competitive advantage ande eases the port’s social license of operation and expansion. We aim towards understanding the economic, social and ambiental practices of the port managers which influence the perception of local communities and reassure the sustainable development of the port cluster. We have defined the sustainable port practices, measured its impacts in the perception of local communities and verified the moderating influence of the regional characteristics and of the port cluster. The inquiry sent to the port stakeholders and Portuguese citizens was used. A sample of 262 answers sustains the methodology based on the model of structural equations (MSE). The results indicate the importance of the port practices of its own impact control in the region, communication of the port with the region, participation of the region in the port’s management and the port’s investment in the region, to assess their influence in the local communities. |

Pretendemos comprender las prácticas económicas, sociales y ambientales de los gestores portuarios que influyen en la percepción de las comunidades locales y aseguran el desarrollo sostenible del clúster portuario. Definimos las prácticas portuarias sostenibles, medimos su impacto en la percepción de las comunidades locales y verificamos la influencia moderadora de las características de la región y del clúster portuario. Se utiliza la encuesta enviada a las partes interesadas del puerto y a los ciudadanos portugueses. Una muestra de 262 respuestas apoya la metodología basada en el modelo de ecuación estructural (SEM). Los resultados indican la importancia de las prácticas portuarias para controlar el impacto del puerto en la región, la comunicación portuaria con la región, la participación de la región en la gestión del puerto y la inversión portuaria en el desarrollo de la región en la influencia de la percepción de las comunidades locales.A percepção positiva do cluster portuário pelas comunidades locais é uma vantagem competitiva e facilita a licença social de operação e expansão do porto. Pretendemos compreender as práticas econômicas, sociais e ambientais dos gestores portuários que influenciam a percepção das comunidades locais e asseguram o desenvolvimento sustentável do cluster portuário. Definimos as práticas portuárias sustentáveis, medimos o seu impacto na percepção das comunidades locais e verificamos a influência moderadora das características da região e do cluster portuário. Utiliza-se o inquérito enviado aos stakeholders portuários e cidadãos portugueses. Uma amostra de 262 respostas suporta a metodologia com base no modelo de equações estruturais (SEM).
