MEANINGS OF BRAZIL AND BRAZILIANS IN A TEXTBOOK OF PORTUGUESE AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Resumo: This article aims to discuss and identify discursive representations about Brazil and Brazilians from a textbook of Portuguese as a Foreign Language. Based on trans/indisciplinary studies in Applied Linguistics and discursive theories of language, the hypothesis is that the analyzed textbook silences the multiple and possible identities of Brazilians; and, when depicted, they seem to be stagnant. In the analysis, the following representations were identified: (a) Brazilians are “nice people”; (b) Brazil: the country of beaches, football and fio dental bikinis; (c) Brazilians are funny; (d) Brazil, an exotic country; and (e) Brazilians are romantic. These representations are inscribed in discourses of coloniality that corroborate totalizing images about the Brazilian language, culture and identity. The analysis points, therefore, to the need to problematize, in the teaching-learning processes of languages, homogeneous and universalizing meanings that (re)produce prejudices, stereotypes and reinforce unequal power relations.

Basándose en estudios trans/interdisciplinarios en Lingüística Aplicada y teorías discursivas del lenguaje, la hipótesis es que el libro de texto analizado silencia las múltiples y posibles identidades de los brasileños, y cuando se representan, parecen estar estancadas. En el análisis, se identificaron las siguientes representaciones: (a) Los brasileños son “personas amables”; (b) Brasil es el país de las playas, del fútbol y de los bikinis de fio dental; (c) Los brasileños son divertidos; (d) Brasil, un país exótico; y (e) Los brasileños son románticos. Estas representaciones se inscriben en discursos de colonialidad que corroboran imágenes totalizadoras sobre el lenguaje, la cultura y la identidad brasileña. El análisis señala, por lo tanto, la necesidad de problematizar, en los procesos de enseñanza-aprendizaje de las lenguas, significados homogéneos y universalizantes que (re)producen prejuicios, estereotipos y refuerzan relaciones de poder desiguales.Este artigo visa discutir e identificar representações discursivas sobre o Brasil e os brasileiros construídas em um livro de Português como Língua Estrangeira (PLE). Com base nos estudos trans/indisciplinares em Linguística Aplicada e em teorias discursivas de linguagem, parte-se da hipótese de que o livro didático analisado silencia as múltiplas e possíveis identidades do brasileiro; e que, quando retratadas, são tidas como estagnadas. Na análise, foram identificadas cinco representações, sintetizadas nos seguintes enunciados: (a) o brasileiro é “gente boa”; (b) Brasil: o país das praias, futebol e fio dental; (c) o brasileiro é engraçado; (d) Brasil, um país exótico; e (e) o brasileiro é romântico. Essas representações se inscrevem em discursos de colonialidade que corroboram imagens totalizantes sobre língua-cultura e identidade brasileiras.
