In many masonry residences of Ourinhos's county it is possible to identify deformations in the external and internal walls of the residencies. This deformation can develop both in the ceiling or in the footer of the houses and its appearance is of bubbles that, in a advanced stage, feature total displacement of the grout, that results in financial losses in view of the need of reform of the area that was affected. The initial hypothesis is that the cause of this it is the organic matter present in the sand that is used in civil construction; which promotes the proliferation of fungi and bacteria that are originated from the Paranapanema River. So, this research has the purpose the possible causes and consequences of the deformation in the walls of some houses in the neighborhoods of Vila Sá and Jardim Brilhante, whose occupation is dated from the 1930s/1940s and 1990s, respectively. For this, it was implemented a questionnaire in all the cited neighborhoods (a total of 201 residences) aiming to measure and characterize the problem and its consequences. Another questionnaire was applied in main stores of construction and in sand harbors of the region. By that time, it was collected 11 samples of sands in two harbors, five samples in two stores and 10 samples in the analyzed neighborhoods. These samples were submitted to qualitative analysis of organic matter, mycological and fecal coliform analysis. Besides, it was made maps of land use in the scale of 1:30.000 to analyze the use and occupancy of permanent preservation areas from the main Paranapanema River course Its results allow affirming that the deformations are not directly connected to infiltration, however, if the residence has this type of problem, will provide the necessary conditions to the proliferation of bacteria and fungi...
