Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease that is associated to the loss of support tissue (periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and cementum) around the teeth and the main local etiologico agent is the dental biofilm. The main objective of the periodontal treatment is the reestablishment of the periodontal health for the removal of the bacterial deposits supra and subgingival gifts at the surface radicular through the scaling and root planing. However the mechanical therapy is not able to eliminate the periodontal pathogens due the capacity that some microorganisms have to install in inaccessible area to the periodontal instruments, beyond the penetration the interior of the soft wall of the pocket. Thus the chemical therapy using antibiotic is considered a coadjuvants treatment to the therapy mechanical, but the indiscriminate use of antimicrobials for reduction of the periodontopathogens have taken the selection and bacterial resistance. In such a way, the search for coadjuvants methods to the periodontal treatment has increased in the last times. With the advent of low level laser emerged a new therapeutic option for different conditions that affect the tissues and its association with photosensitizing drugs (chromophore) constitutes the call Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). This association promotes a greater effect photobiology, may also promote the lethal action on cells and microorganisms. In this direction, the PDT appears as an alternative treatment to the use of agent traditional antimicrobials in the periodontal treatment. Front to these facts, the purpose constituts to review the present study's literature on the effect of the photodynamic therapy in the treatment of the periodontal disease.
