Avaliação das condições de saúde bucal em adolescentes que participaram de um programa odontológico educativo preventivo na primeira década de vida

Resumo: The present study carried out a longitudinal evaluation, whose purpose was to verify oral health conditions in patients who participated in a dental program which nature is educational and preventive in the first decade of their lives. The program is divided into two phases of assistance. In the first, patients were assisted from the first year of their lives until they complete 4 years old. Afterwards, in the Prevention Clinic, educational and preventive dental care are maintained until they aged 9. The 51 adolescents who participated from this study enrolled in the dental program in 2003 and were requested to attend a consultation of an odontological examination accompanied with their father or mother or legal guardian, where the following tests were performed: prevalence of dental caries by the DMFT index; gingival health by the periodontal community index; dental occlusion by the dental aesthetic index and the occurrence of dental fluorosis (Dean index). The average DMFT rate of participants in this survey was 1.0. In relation to the gingival condition, 58% of the sample had a healthy gingival tissue index. In the orthodontic evaluation, 46 patients (90%) exhibited maxillary overjet, none of the patients exhibited mandibular overjet, and 3 (6%) patients had exhibited previous open bite. It was also observed that 82% of adolescents did not exhibit dental fluorosis. Based on this results, the conclusion is that the application of a program with preventive educational nature according to the one performed in this research was effective in obtaining very satisfactory indices considering the aspects of dental caries prevention, gingival condition, orthodontic alterations and occurrence of fluorosis

O programa é dividido em duas fases de atendimento. Na primeira, os pacientes recebem atendimento desde o primeiro ano de vida até completarem 4 anos de idade. A seguir, na Clínica de Prevenção os cuidados odontológicos educativos e preventivos são mantidos até completarem 9 anos. Os 51 adolescentes que participaram desta pesquisa ingressaram no programa odontológico no ano de 2003 e foram solicitados a comparecerem juntamente com o pai ou mãe ou responsável legal para uma consulta de avaliação odontológica, onde foram realizadas as seguintes verificações: prevalência de cárie dentária pelo índice CPOD; saúde gengival pelo índice periodontal comunitário; oclusão dentária pelo índice de estética dentária e a ocorrência de fluorose dentária (índice de Dean). O índice médio de CPOD dos participantes dessa pesquisa foi 1,0. Em relação a condição gengival, 58% da amostra apresentou índice de tecido gengival hígido. Na avaliação ortodôntica, 46 pacientes (90%) apresentaram overjet maxilar, nenhum paciente apresentou overjet mandibular e 3 (6%) pacientes apresentaram mordida aberta anterior. Observou-se também que 82% dos adolescentes não apresentaram fluorose dentária.
