The county of Apiaí (SP) is located in the Ribeira Valley, one of the most important regions for the State of São Paulo when considering its richness in natural resources and its potential as environmental heritage, cultural, historical, speleological, archaeological, palaeontological and mining. Some of these assets is largely ignored by the population that do not recognized themselves as heirs of these riches, which creates an obstacle to their protection. Thus, the implementation of a Geosciences museum in the city of Apiaí, taking samples stored at the Center for Apiaí ‘s Multidisciplinary and Integrated Studies (CIEMApiaí) of the Mineral Resources Research Company (CPRM), derived from field activities geological service and collections of former and current employees of the company, aims to disseminate the Geosciences in the local community, through educational tours and extension activities in the museum, contextualising visits to the city's history and addressing the importance that people have in protecting the heritage that the region possesses. The Geosciences museum, CIEM-Apiaí, opened in October 2014, contains a collection of more than 600 samples of minerals, rocks and fossils, having samples of great aesthetic, educational and historical value.
