A Comparative Study Between Two Brazilian Translations of the “Youth Self-Report” (YSR)

Resumo: The Youth Self-Report is a North-American self evaluation inventory of behavior problems aimed at youth (11-18 years). A literature review has indicated an absence of validation studies of this questionnaire in Brazil and the coexistence of two translations, here named Forms A and B. To overcome such difficulty, helping future researches, a group of 90 youths (M = 13.12; SD = 0.805) from three Brazilian cities fulfilled successively both trans lations: half of them followed the sequence A-B and the other half the sequence B-A. In both situations all the participants had a break equivalent to the duration of a class before filling the second translation. No statistical differences were found regarding the answers on both forms. The correlation index between forms A and B was elevated for most scales, indicating content equivalence. In conclusion, it is desirable to have only one translation in use in Brazil, considering the results that depicted that both translations are capable of measuring, with similar intensity, the proposed behaviors.

Una revisión de la literatura indica ausencia de estudios de validación de este cuestionario en Brasil y la coexistencia de dos traducciones, presentadas aquí como Formas A y B. Para superar estas dificultades, y ayudar a futuros estudios, 90 jóvenes (M = 13,12; DE = 0,805) de tres ciudades brasileñas respondieron las dos traducciones: mitad siguieron la secuencia A-B, y los otros, la secuencia B-A. En ambas situaciones los participantes tuvieron un descanso equivalente a la duración de una clase, antes de llenar la segunda traducción. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticas en cuanto a la respuesta de los dos cuestionarios. El índice de correlación entre las formas A y B es elevado para la mayoría de las escalas, indicando equivalencia de contenido. Concluyese que es deseable tener sólo una de las formas en uso en Brasil pues los resultados mostraron que las dos traducciones son capaces de medir con relativa proximidad los com portamientos propuestos.O Inventário de Auto-avaliação para Jovens é um questionário norte-americano de auto-avaliação de comportamento para jovens (de 11 a 18 anos). Para superar tal dificuldade, facilitando trabalhos futuros de validação, 90 adolescentes (M = 13,12; DP = 0,805) de três cidades brasileiras preencheram sucessivamente as duas traduções: metade deles na seqüência A-B e a outra metade na seqüência B-A. Nas duas situações, os participantes fizeram um intervalo correspondente a uma aula antes de preencherem a segunda forma. Não se encontraram diferenças estatisticamente significativas nas respostas dadas às duas formas. O índice de correlação entre A e B foi alto para a maioria das escalas analisadas, indicando equivalência de conteúdo entre elas.
