Racism and Indigenous Peoples in Brazil: A Scoping Review

The social interaction between the “white man” and indigenous peoples followed a racist colonial pattern, which continues to have repercussions today. The colonization process implanted the seeds of racism in our society, and this virus has undergone successive mutations and adaptations to new circumstances. Despite the flexibility and historical persistence of racism against indigenous peoples, this subject has received limited research attention in Brazil. This study presents a scoping literature review on racism against indigenous peoples, aiming to identify theories that focus on this phenomenon, analyze its manifestations, and explore possibilities for investigation and intervention. The literature search was conducted in several databases, including the Brazilian Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, American Psychological Association, Virtual Health Library, CAPES, and SCIELO journals, using the terms “racismo and indígenas” or “racismo and índios”. A total of three theses/dissertations and seven articles were identified, with only one of them being an empirical article. The results indicate that the topic is under-addressed and fragmented, with diverse fields examining different aspects of racism, but with limited conceptual and empirical depth. The review concludes by emphasizing the need for further studies, as they are crucial in preventing the replication of racist attitudes and the invisibility of indigenous peoples within the scientific community
