This research discusses the relationship of children with public spaces in the city of São Paulo, nowadays. It is assumed that everyday life in heterogeneous and democratic public spaces is a fundamental factor for the constitution of subjects who exercise their citizenship and empathy to promote resistance, to oppose and, ultimately, to transform social injustices. However, the relationship of children to public spaces in the city of São Paulo is hampered by socio-spatial segregation. The culture of the child’s poor integration with the city’s public space is manifested mainly in the nobler neighborhoods, but other effects of socio-spatial segregation can be felt in peripheral neighborhoods. Therefore, through the participatory methodological process of observation and based on the concepts of socio-spatial segregation, developed by Caldeira (2000) and Vilaça (2001), the daily lives of children in the spaces of two neighborhoods with contrasting socio-spatial characteristics were analyzed the Jardim Lapenna, which is located in the São Miguel Paulista district, approximately 20 km from the central area of the city of São Paulo, and is home to a low-income population, and Itaim Bibi, a noble neighborhood located in the southwest quadrant of the city and houses predominantly middle and high income population.
