It was aimed to verify if in recent years the criterion of exhibition contests adopted for Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador breeds was successful, in other words, if the succeeding generations present, the recommended morphology by the racial pattern in connection with a high quality ambling gait. Therefore, the classifications won by each horse during the national exhibitions on morphology and gait were submitted to the Spearman correlation, to register the number of contests with correlation (P<0,05) among the morphology and gait contest classifications or without correlation (P>0,05). Subsequently, the number of contests with or without correlation were submitted to the frequency distribution test, considering the variables: breed, year, age, ambling gait category and sex. The Spearman correlation coefficient (r) of contest with correlation was also used as a parameter. Only on Mangalarga Marchador was observed a difference between years of evaluation, registering between 1998 and 2004 greater number of contests with correlations between morphological and ambling gait performances. On both breeds, the foals presented more contests with correlation than adult horses. When comparing the Spearman correlation coefficients, the Campolina’s contests presented superior r than Mangalarga Marchador, 68,14% and 63,68%, respectively. Only in Mangalarga Marchador breed the males presented higher r value than females, 67,27% and 59,73%, respectively. It was concluded that the contest criterion adopted by both Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador breeders associations are not succeeding in converging the following generations, the recommended morphology by the racial patterns in combination with a high quality ambling gait.
