The management of supply chain is seen in the market as the primary tool for competitiveness. The modernization of the dairy market is a fact that covers all regions and companies depend on the quality of raw material, especially when it comes to food products. The process of classification and selection of suppliers must undergo a higher level of qualification and several criteria must be considered. Due to the increase in the number and nature of the evaluation criteria, it also increases the search for methods that facilitates the decision making process. One of the strategies that can be adopted in the search for partnerships is the ranking of suppliers. In this process managers can create classes or groups of suppliers so that it will be evaluated according to the business need or market availability. This research aimed to classify suppliers in milk processing industry, through a multi-criteria methodology for supporting the decision maker. Using as a case study of a company in the municipality of Serra Talhada, wilderness of Pernambucano, most populous city in the region. The milk production in the region of Serra Talhada before sold “in natura” at certain points of sales, is almost entirely reverted to the processing mills. According to the characteristics of the region, the productivity by supplier is low, which leads industries to seek a larger number of suppliers, then a greater difficulty in controlling the quality of milk. The classification allows the decision maker to split the suppliers into groups, enabling better supply chain management. Therefore, it was used as an exploratory research methodology with qualitative approach by interviewing the managers of the processing companies, identified through systematic observation. 08 suppliers were classified into 03 classes, considering 05 criteria. In applying the model, ELECTRE TRI, we found that none of the suppliers was rated MBOM, even in the case of a model that provides the analysis of the criteria for non-compensatory manner. According to the survey data was possible to identify some difficulties that region is facing, among them the low productivity of dairy farmers, and due to this, the processing companies work with minimum capacity.The importance of this research came from the lack of scientific studies related to the topic and study area, contributing with both market and with academic field.
