Resumo: Psychiatric disorders cause various problems to the patient’s life, such as emotional discomfort, behavioral disorders, changes in their usual routine, psychological, mental or cognitive suffering or impairment. The objective was to analyze the specific literature on the main phytotherapic medicine used in psychiatric disorders between 2008 and 2014. This is an integrative literature review. Data were collected in the electronic databases LILACS and SciELO, using the descriptors: Kawa Kawa; Valeriana; Passiflora incarnata; Hipericun; Matricaria; Ginkgo biloba. A total of 08 articles met the eligibility criteria and were therefore selected and analyzed. The results indicated that Piper methysticum was the phytotherapic species with the highest number of controlled studies involving patients with different disorders, mainly anxiety. The Kawa kawa (Piper methysticum) is the only phytotherapic that indicates anxiolytic effect. The most common psychiatric disorder was Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and mental disorders. The conclusion is that herbal medicines still require greater regulatory effort and preparation by health professionals, both in the prescription and in the information to the patients.
