The increasing occurrence of overweight and obesity has been a major concern in many countries mainly due to the association with other health problems as arterial hypertension, diabetes, cancer, as well as related psycho-social problems. This research evaluated the prevalence of overweight and obesity among 1015 adolescents from public schools in Birigüi/SP being 472 female and 541 male. The mean age for girls was 13, 3 years and 13, 4 for boys. Weight and height of all students were measured and from these data the body mass index was calculated. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was obtained from three reference tables: the one developed by the National Center for Health Statistics (CDC table), the one developed by the International Obesity Task Force which is based on data from five countries( Cole table) and a Brazilian table developed from data get by the Pesquisa Nacional sobre Saúde e Nutrição (National Research on Health and Nutrition) and developed by Anjos (Anjos table). The 85th and 95th percent values according age and sex was used to define overweight and obesity for each case. Prevalence overweight and obesity was 16, 09% and 4,94% with the use of CDC table. The values were 15,7% and 2,57% for overweight and obesity for Cole table. Higher values, 23,69% and 14,21% for overweight and obesity were obtained with the use of Anjos table. Anjos table provided lower limit values for the 85th and 95th percentiles. Comparing with other Brazilian data the prevalence of overweight and obesity seems to be a little lower in Birigüi but the Birigüi data suggested prevalence being higher for boys than for girls.
