Resumo: Among the various tasks which constituted the daily routine of Brazil's sugar economy, that of collecting fuelwood from the colony's plentiful forests was plausibly the most extensive. Fuel's increasing scarcity exacerbated elite social conflict, increased labor and capital costs related to its supply, multiplied petitions to the crown, and eventually dictated the adoption of more efficient firing technology. Some of the many activities which vied for fuel against the sugar mill's furnaces will be described, for these contributed to the contest, in which all colonists participedted, for one vastly utilized resource.

A crescente escassez de combustível exacerbou o conflito social da elite, elevou os custos de mão-de-obra e capital ligados ao seu fornecimento, multiplicou petições a Coroa e acabou por impor a adoção de uma tecnologia mais eficiente para a alimentação das fornalhas. Serão descritas, neste estudo, algumas das numerosas atividades quecompetiam pelo combustível com as fornalhas dos engenhos, pois elas fizeram parte da disputa, da qual participaram todos os colonos, por um recurso único amplamente utilizado. Universidade de São Paulo.
