Resumo: Focused on the work of Florestan Fernandes, this article deals with the relations between the constitution of academic sociology in Brazil, the formation of modern capitalist society and the modernist movement. The proposed articulation allows us to reveal how the lines of sociological reflection - its proposals and dilemmas - can be understood in the light of the impasses faced by Brazilian society.
