Impacts of bariatric surgery on the quality of life of patients with hypertension

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the impact of weight loss, achieved through bariatric surgery, on managing arterial hypertension and improving of patients' quality of life.METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with adults aged 23 to 59 years of both genders, who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. They completed a structured questionnaire covering personal identification, sociodemographic data, height, pre-and post-surgery weight, lowest weight achieved, weight regain, professional follow-up, physical activity, comorbidities, evolution of arterial hypertension, medication use, and the simplified BAROS questionnaire to assess the quality of life.RESULTS: Of the 73 participants, the majority were female (61; 83,56%) and had hypertension before surgery (43; 58.90%). There was a decrease in BMI from 42.22 kg/m² to 25.31 kg/m² and a significant improvement in hypertension parameters. Among them, 30 (69,77%) had the comorbidity resolved, and 13 (30,23%) reduced their medication dosage. Additionally, 72 (98,63%) reported a considerable improvement in quality of life, including physical capacity, social relationships, work ability, sexual interest, and well-being.CONCLUSIONS: Gastric bypass surgery led to the normalization of blood pressure levels in most participants. In the remaining cases, there was notable improvement in the management of hypertension, evidenced by a reduced need for medication to maintain a good quality of life.
