Resumo: OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality of life of caregivers of dependent elderly people linked to a health unit in Porto Alegre.METHODS: Cross-sectional analytical study. The sample consisted of 59 caregivers. The data collection instruments were: sociodemographic questionnaire, Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living (Katz Scale), and WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire. The analyzes were performed by means of the SPSS program. The association between the outcomes and the degree of dependency of the elderly was investigated by means of Pearson' correlation coefficient with a level of significance of 5%.RESULTS: The predominance of non-specialist, middle-aged caregiving women themselves facing minor health problems was observed. Higher quality of life scores were verified in the physical domain, while the lowest were observed in the environment domain.CONCLUSIONS: No significant statistical association was found between the degree of dependency of the elderly and the domains of quality of life of their caregivers.

A amostra foi composta por 59 cuidadores. Os instrumentos de coleta de dados foram: questionário sociodemográfico, Índice de Independência nas Atividades da Vida Diária (Escala de Katz) e questionário WHOQOL-Bref. As análises foram realizadas através do programa SPSS. A investigação da associação entre os desfechos e o grau de dependência dos idosos nas atividades da vida diária foi realizada através da análise de correlação de Pearson, com nível de significância de 5%.RESULTADOS: Verificou-se predomínio de mulheres, de meia-idade e com algum problema de saúde autorreferido exercendo o cuidado informal.
