Resumo: Chronic kidney disease is characterized by impairment of functions such as filtering waste, regulation of water and other chemicals and the production of hormones. The hemodialysis as renal replacement therapy used for chronic renal failure patients is highlighted in the literature as a modality and imposes limitations suffered physical, psychological and social. Among the various aspects that change the lives of kidney patients, the work is described as one of suffering profound consequences in its continuity, and modifying the daily routine of the 7 patient, although it is not immediately incapacitated for work activities under varying conditions physical each, often need to resort to social benefits such as sick pay or disability retirement. This research aimed to understand, using as a basis the theoretical socio-historical psychology, meaning that kidney patients who use this treatment modality and remain in working life, ascribe to the work. Specific objectives were also searched the grounds for maintenance work and if it helps in fighting the disease. This methodology for conducting this scientific research was qualitative, using for data collection semistructured interviews focusing on life story work-related, the experience of illness and work, and participant observation. The survey sample was seven people (one woman and six men), aged between 32 and 85, who make use of hemodialysis as a method of treatment of renal failure, in clinical specialty in Curitiba/PR, and sustain life labor. The results of the meanings of work and the reasons for its maintenance pointed to the subsistence and consumerism, dignity/independence, the preservation of mental and maintenance activity at work and the identity of the worker. O programa de hemodiálise, como terapia renal substitutiva, utilizado para doentes renais crônicos é destacado na literatura como uma modalidade sofrida e que impõe limitações de ordem física, psicológica e social. Entre os diversos aspectos que se alteram na vida dos doentes renais, o trabalho é apontado como um dos que sofrem profundas consequências na sua continuidade, modificando o cotidiano e a rotina do paciente que, embora não fique imediatamente incapacitado para as atividades laborais, variando as condições físicas de cada um, necessita muitas vezes lançar mão de benefícios sociais, como auxílio-doença ou aposentadoria por invalidez. A presente pesquisa pretendeu compreender, utilizando como base teórica a psicologia sócio-histórica, o significado que os doentes renais, que utilizam dessa modalidade de tratamento e permanecem na vida laboral, atribuem ao trabalho. Como objetivo específico, foram pesquisados ainda os motivos para a manutenção do trabalho e se ele auxilia no enfrentamento da doença. A metodologia definida para a realização desta investigação científica foi qualitativa, utilizando-se para a coleta de dados entrevistas semiestruturadas com foco na história de vida relacionada ao trabalho, na vivência da doença e no trabalho, além da observação participante. A amostra da pesquisa foi de sete pessoas (uma mulher e seis homens), com idades entre 32 e 85 anos, que fazem uso da hemodiálise como método de tratamento da insuficiência renal, em clínica especializada na cidade de Curitiba/PR, e que mantêm a vida laboral. Os resultados encontrados sobre os significados do trabalho e os motivos da sua manutenção apontaram para a subsistência e consumismo, a dignidade/independência, a preservação da saúde mental e a manutenção da atividade pelo trabalho e a identidade de trabalhador.
