Group work in foreign language classes: “Deep action”, sources of stress and problems among participants

Resumo: This paper presents and discusses data from a classroom research focusing on student interaction during group activities in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) class, aiming to better understand how students feel about this kind of activity, especially with regard to the existence of situations that may be characterized as “deep action” (Holliday, 1994). The research was conducted in a university context and data was collected from reflective journals written by students participating in an English course, in which different ways to form groups were used. Results show that, contrary to what some researchers and many teacher manuals say, the groups can cause relationship problems among participants and that group work can be a source of stress in EFL classes. In addition, the refl ective diaries proved to be an important tool to understand what Holliday has called “deep action” in the classroom.Keywords: foreign language teaching, group work, deep action.

In addition, the refl ective diaries proved to be an important tool to understand what Holliday has called “deep action” in the classroom.Keywords: foreign language teaching, group work, deep action.Este trabalho apresenta e discute dados de uma pesquisa em sala de aula com foco na interação dos alunos durante atividades realizadas em grupo na sala de aula de inglês como Língua Estrangeira (LE), com o objetivo de melhor compreender a percepção dos alunos sobre esse tipo de atividade, principalmente no que diz respeito à existência de situações que possam ser caracterizadas como “ação profunda” (Holliday, 1994). A pesquisa foi realizada em contexto universitário e os dados foram coletados através de diários reflexivos escritos pelos alunos participantes de um curso de Letras-Inglês em que foram usadas diferentes maneiras para formação de grupos de trabalho. A análise dos resultados mostra que, ao contrário do que sugerem algumas pesquisas e muitos manuais de ensino, a formação dos grupos pode causar problemas de relacionamento entre os participantes e que o trabalho em grupo pode ser mais uma fonte de estresse nas aulas de LE.
