Civil construction is a sector of the Economy that has a large number of employees working, with high turnover, most of them with low education levels. In view to improve work conditions and reduce work accidents, the standard NR 18 – “Environmental Working Conditions in the Construction Industry” was launched, establishing standards and parameters related to the work within the construction sites. The high number of accidents, withdrawals, low productivity and poor quality is directly related to non-compliance with the guidelines presented in NR 18. The NR 18 is an extensive standard that seeks to meet all working conditions within civil construction works. In addition, NR 18 has a direct relationship with other regulatory standards, such as NR 9 – “Program for Prevention and Environmental Risks”, NR 35 – “Working at Height”, among others. Compliance with NR 18 at construction sites should be planned together with the elaboration of all projects involved, in order to predict the costs of the implementation and monitoring of the items provided in the regulation itself. The preparation of a checklist is the most practical way to control the various stages of the work. In a mid-high standard building in Florianópolis – SC, comprised of five towers - being two towers with eleven floors and three towers with nine floors – reaching the peak of 80 workers during construction, was observed that approximately 54% of the items of the NR 18 were not applicable. Among the items that are applicable, it was observed that 97% are in compliance and only 3% are of non-compliance with the NR-18.
