Diagnosis of biosafety in the clinics of the UFSM dentistry school

Resumo: Dentistry is a profession that poses several hazards, including biological agents that constitute a serious threat to the health of the professional, the patient and the team. Learning to manage these hazards is a goal to be achieved and the education needed to do this must begin early in academic life. This study was carried out in the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) and its aim was to perform a diagnosis of biosecurity. This diagnosis was made by applying a check-list that assessed the actions developed by students (through observation plus an interview). The data gathered was analyzed and represented in tables and graphs. It can be concluded that greater commitment to infection-control measures is required, that the discipline of biosecurity and ergonomics (human engineering) should be included in college curriculum, and that the physical structure of clinics should be aligned to legal requirements to make it easier to work more ergnonomically, thus contributing to reducing occupational risks.

Aprender a controlar estes riscos é uma meta a alcançar, e a educação para isto deve ser iniciada ainda na vida acadêmica. Este estudo foi realizado no curso de Odontologia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria – UFSM e teve como objetivo fazer um diagnóstico de biossegurança. Este diagnóstico foi feito por meio da aplicação de um check list que avaliou as ações desenvolvidas pelos acadêmicos (através da observação e de uma entrevista). Os dados coletados foram analisados e representados através de tabelas e gráficos.
