QUANTIFICATION OF CARBON STOCK COPERNICIA PRUNIFERA (MILL.) H. E. MOORE IN DIFFERENT AREAS

Resumo: | Copernicia prunifera (Mill.) H. E. Moore (carnauba), in its natural habitat, contributes to the ecological balance. The study aimed to quantify the carbon stock present in the carnauba stem and leaves and to check in which type of area the carnauba has a higher carbon stock. This way, we may diffuse the need of conservation of the species. The experiment was conducted at the farm of municipality of Campo Maior, Piauí, Brazil, from July to December 2013, and the sampling plots were performed in different environments. We used allometric equation for estimating biomass, from which we quantified the carbon stock, and the t-test was applied. The carbon stock was 14.71 kg ha -1. We conclude that the carnaubas on the river banks have, on average, greater carbon stock (4.72 kg) than those present in dry areas (2.33 kg). Thereby, we encourage the conservation of the species should occur in strategic areas for providing this ecosystem service. |

Moore), em seu habitat natural,contribui para o equilíbrio ecológico. Este estudo teve como objetivos:quantificar o estoque de carbono (EC) presente no estipe e nas folhas decarnaúba e verificar em que tipo de área a planta tem maior EC, com afinalidade de difundir a conservação ambiental da espécie. O experimento foirealizado em uma fazenda do município de Campo Maior, Piauí, nos mesesde julho a dezembro de 2013, onde se fez a amostragem por parcelas emambientes distintos. Utilizou-se uma equação alométrica para calculara biomassa e, a partir desta, quantificou-se o EC e realizou-se o teste t deStudent. O estoque total de carbono foi de 14,71 kg.ha-1.
