THE PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC MASTER OF SCIENCE IN MANAGEMENT: SIMILARITIES, DIFFERENCES AND CHALLENGES TO STRICTO SENSU POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS IN BRAZIL

Resumo: The Professional Master of Science (PM) is a graduate course that has experienced significant growth in Brazil, thus it is important to understand its nature in comparison to the Academic Master of Science (AM). This is dependent on outlining some considerations regarding theideas that form the basis for these kinds of degrees with the objective of understanding their similarities, differences and challenges, specifically in subject areas related to Management. Therefore, and based on the available literature, legislation and data obtained from the internet and through electronic and telephone dialogues with the coordinators of certain courses, it was possible to identify their characteristics, backgrounds and regulations, and subsequently analyze the similarities and differences between the two course types. Some relevant points that arose included: PM student and teacher profiles, the role played by CAPES in the process of monitoring and regulating this type of course and the challenges related to the consolidation of the PM in Brazil.

Entende-se que pesquisas desenvolvidas a respeito dos MPs podem contribuir para a compreensão e desenvolvimento desse tipo de curso. Para isso, verificou-se a necessidade de traçar algumas considerações e contraposições em relação às ideiasque perpassam as modalidades de MP e MA com o objetivo compreender suas convergências, divergências e desafios. O foco da análise foi direcionado aos cursos da área de Administração. Assim, com base na literatura disponível, na legislação, em dados obtidos por meio da internetsobre os programas de mestrado em Administração no Brasil reconhecidos pela CAPES, e dados obtidos por contato eletrônico e telefônico, foi possível identificar as características, o histórico e a regulamentação de mestrado profissional e acadêmico no Brasil. Evidenciaram-se alguns pontos relevantes que caracterizam os cursos tais como o perfil discente e docente, o formato do trabalho de conclusão, o destino do egresso, o financiamento dos cursos e a forma de avaliação.
