Resumo: Recent science journalism studies have found a non-critical and reverential discourse as well as a reductionist perspective that restricts researches to its finished conclusions, concepts and products. Based on the hypothesis that such features are related to conventional journalism’s core paradigms, we analyze a science reportage by Richard Preston, “The Mountains of Pi”, written from literary journalism principles and techniques. As we have found, it promotes a distinct understanding of science by opening black-boxes, in the latourian sense, and by narrating work processes and the historic development of concepts, and, albeit the author assumes for himself his characters’ cause, his textual elaboration allows for the reader to make his own impressions about science.
