SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL-BASED INTERVENTION PROPOSAL IN A COMMUNITY

Although several factors interfere in the subjects´ health, the relationship between subjects and the environment in which they live and work should be highlighted. Current analysis is a joint venture between undergraduates of the Environmental Engineering and Occupational Therapy Courses of the University of Uberaba, Uberaba MG Brazil, which investigates social and environmental health conditions of the Comunidade Santa Fé in the municipality of Uberaba, distant some 30 km from downtown. A half-structured questionnaire was applied between 15/08/2009 and 08/05/2010, with 200 families of which 78% were met in home visiting. All residents were classified by age. Many chronic diseases and also diseases related to environmental issues were extant. Smoking and alcoholism were reported in 86% of the families. Further, 33% of the population worked on the family homestead; 35% were informal workers and wage ranged between 0 and 2 Brazilian minimum wages in 68% of the population. Results suggest health educational activities and the Educating Greenhouse, suggested by the Ministry of the Environment, fits in the process. These activities may be worked out by the community and the participation of discussion groups within a social and education approach aiming at the promotion of health and improvement in life conditions.
