Prevalence and profile of smoking Nursing Course students at the University Severino Sombra, Vassouras RJ Brazil, are provided. A questionnaire was handed to a sample of 200 over-18-year-old registered students, from February to March 2009. Prevalence analysis, approximated to 100%, was employed. The prevalence of smokers, former smokers and nonsmokers was 10.5%, 4% and 85.5% respectively. Smoking was 1.2 times more frequent among males (11.8 / 10.1) and among females aged 21 to 30 years old, with 33.3%. Starting smoking age was prior to the students’ 18th year (71.4%) and smoking-motivating factors comprised influence of friends and curiosity, with 38.1% and 28.6% respectively. Most smokers (71.4%) had mild nicotine-dependence. Results show that smoking among nursing students at the USS was not merely present but slightly higher than results provided by previous research.
