Resumo: Studies on multifactors in the etiology of temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) try to identify the most active factor at a particular instance. Current analysis evaluates the prevalence of psychosomatic changes and parafunctional habits in TMD patients. A retrospective research was undertaken with the retrieval of secondary data from the clinical records of patients attended to and registered in the Discipline on Pain and Clinical Occlusion at the Universidade Salgado de Oliveira and the Universidade Federal Fluminense, respectively between August 2011 and July 2012. Clinical records were investigated on data collected during the patient´s clinical review with regard to gender, parafunctional habits and psychosomatic changes. Data were tabulated on SPSS for Windows 17 and analyzed by chi-square test. Samples consisted of 103 clinical records of TMD patients and showed the prevalence of alteration in females (p=0.0136) and the high prevalence of involuntary teeth gnashing in males, whereas nailbiting and chewing gum were mainly present in females. No statistical difference existed between the absence of parafunctional habit and teeth gnashing (p=0.1069). Results show that emotional factors and parafunctional habits have an important role in TMD etiology and continuation.

Saúde e Pesquisa; v. 6 n. 2 (2013): maio/ago.2176-9206reponame:Saúde e Pesquisa (Online)instname:Cesumar Diretoria de Pesquisainstacron:CESUMARporhttps://periodicos.unicesumar.edu.br/index.php/saudpesq/article/view/2479/1960Alfaya, Thays AlmeidaZukowska, Hanna RezendeUemoto, LucianaOliveira., Simone Saldanha Ignácio deMartinez, Omar Efrain RoqueGarcia, Marco Antônio CavalcantiGouvêa, Cresus Vinicius Depesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2020-09-04T13:28:11Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/2479Revistahttps://periodicos.unicesumar.edu.br/index.php/saudpesqPUBhttps://periodicos.unicesumar.edu.br/index.php/saudpesq/oainaep@cesumar.br2176-92061983-1870opendoar:2020-09-04T13:28:11Saúde e Pesquisa (Online) - Cesumar Diretoria de Pesquisafalse
