Prevention of avoidable complications in an intensive care unit: an integral review

Summary: Strategies used by the nursing team for the prevention of avoidable complications in adult intensive care units are investigated. The integral review occurred in October 2017 and comprised articles in databases LILACS, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, between 2007 and 2017. Nine studies which complied with inclusion and exclusion criteria were chosen. There were six (66.6%) studies on interventions related to pressure-caused lesions, whilst doses in medicine, hyper and/or hypokalemia and the care of the aerial pathways had one article (11.1%) each. Employment of institutional protocols, the establishment of equipments and information systems that monitored dosages of medicines, identification of bed repositioning could be underscored. Results reveal the lack of publications on nursing related to other avoidable complications in ICUs.

Results reveal the lack of publications on nursing related to other avoidable complications in ICUs.O objetivo deste estudo foi conhecer as estratégias adotadas pela equipe de enfermagem para prevenção de complicações evitáveis nas unidades de terapia intensiva para adultos. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa feita no mês de outubro de 2017, com análise de artigos indexados nas bases de dados LILACS, MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, entre 2007 e 2017. Foram selecionados nove estudos que correspondiam aos critérios de inclusão e exclusão. No que concerne aos principais resultados, as intervenções relacionadas à lesão por pressão correspondem a seis (66,6%) estudos, e a dosagens de medicamentos, hiper e/ou hipocalemia e cuidado de vias aéreas contribuíram com um (11,1%) estudo cada tema. Entre as estratégias, destacam-se o uso de protocolos institucionais, a implantação de equipamentos e sistemas de informática que contribuam para monitorar dosagens de medicamentos, identificação de reposicionamento do leito, entre outros.
