Summary: The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) defines pain as “an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with or related to real or potential tissue injury, or reported as if the injury existed; moreover, all individuals learn to use this term through their past experiences”. Pain is clinically classified into two types, acute and chronic. Whereas acute pain is the most frequent complaint of individuals seeking medical care (especially emergency), chronic pain is a more serious health problem due to its high prevalence in society and the difficulty in treating it. Knowledge on the structures and mechanisms related to the painful process is crucial for health professionals when the patients bring their complaint. Mechanisms related to pain (transduction, transmission and modulation) are reviewed and the anatomical structures causing the painful process are underscored.

Clinicamente, a dor é classificada em dois tipos: a aguda e a crônica. A dor aguda é a queixa mais frequente dos indivíduos que procuram assistência médica (principalmente de urgência), enquanto a dor crônica constitui um problema de saúde de maior gravidade devido a sua alta prevalência na sociedade e na sua dificuldade em tratá-la. Conhecer as estruturas e os mecanismos relacionados ao processo doloroso é fundamental para profissionais da área da saúde na abordagem do paciente com a queixa.
