Resumo: This article consolidates the main topics of the lectures on the subject given by the author to the Takemi Program in International Health Seminar, Harvard University, Boston, MA, USA, on February 25, 2016 and to the 21th Academia for Global Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine and the JW Lee Center for Global Medicine, Seoul, South Korea, April 4, 2016. We thank the organizers and the audience of both events for the insights that have significantly contributed for this paper. The author has no conflicts of interest to declare for this study.

Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brasil.Zika virus, which was first discovered in 1947, has become a global threat to human health as it is rapidly spreading through Latin America, the Caribbean, the US and Asia, after causing a large outbreak in the northeast part of Brazil in 2015. There is ample evidence to support that Zika virus is associated with neurological complications such as microcephaly. The review aims to provide an overview on the complex issues involved in the emergence of Zika virus's neurological disorders and to discuss possible explanations of Zika virus introduction and dissemination in Brazil.
