Effects of age of plants on percent of flower set in two bean cultivars

An experiment was carried out to study the flowering standards of the cultivars 'Tambó' and 'Rio Tibaji', comparing the age of plants with percent of flower set. Age of plants in days was counted starting from the first flower opening. Twenty-three plants of each cultivar were selected in the middle of an experimental area. The open flowers of each plant were noted and labeled daily. The pods set on the same day were grouped during harvest for study of percent of flower set. The number of grains per pod was also noted. The cultivar 'Tambó' showed shorter flowering periods (19 days), and higher percent of flower sat (29%) than cultivar 'Rio Tibaji', 24 days and 24%, respectively. In both cultivars, the percent of flower sat and the number of grains per pod decreased as the age of plants increased.
