Resumo: The effect of folding maize (Zea mays L.) below the ear on the production of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) was evaluated in an intercropping system at Fazenda Experimental da EPAMIG, at Patos de Minas, MG, Brazil, for three years from, 1981/82 to 1983/84. Tall and short statured maize and growth habit type II and III beans were evaluated in a randomized split-plot design and five replications. The maize cultivars were planted in the whole plots and the effect of folding the stalks below the ear was the split-plot. The stalks were folded below the ear shortly after physiological maturity and the bean cultivars were immeadiately planted. The maize production was not affected by the practice of folding the stalk and the average bean production was reduced 40% in the intercropping system as compared to that of the monoculture system. The folding of the tall statured maize cultivar did not increase the bean yield whereas the folding of short type maize cultivar increased the bean yield by an average of 12%. No significant interaction of maize cultivars x bean cultivars or the practice of folding the stalks x bean cultivars was detected.

Pesquisa Agropecuaria BrasileiraPesquisa Agropecuária BrasileiraFilho, Israel A.
