Profile of beekeepers and aspects of stingless bee breeding in Santa Catarina

Resumo: Bees are responsible for pollinating 90% of flowering plants. In different Brazilian biomes it is estimated the occurrence of 300 species of stingless bees. Due to the ease of handling, meliponiculture has stood out as an economic and recreational activity in Santa Catarina. This study aimed to evaluate the socioeconomic aspects of beekeepers in SantaCatarina state. The information was obtained through the application of an online questionnaire addressing topics related to the raising of stingless bees. Sixty-two responses were obtained from beekeepers from 31 municipalities distributed across the state. Meliponiculture is practiced by breeders between 26 and 45 years old who started the activity less than three years ago. Among those who answered the questionnaire, 75.8% live in urban areas, having the activity as a hobby. The most raised bee species is the jataí (Tetragonisca angustula). This is the first study on the profile of stingless beekeepers in Santa Catarina and identifying the demands and improvements that can be made in the sector.

Devido à facilidade no manejo, a meliponicultura tem se destacado como atividade econômica e recreativa em Santa Catarina. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de avaliar aspectos socioeconômicos de meliponicultores em Santa Catarina. As informações foram obtidas por meio da aplicação de questionário online abordando temas relacionados à criação de abelhas sem ferrão. Foram obtidas 62 respostas de criadores de 31 municípios distribuídos em seis regiões do Estado. A meliponicultura é praticada por criadores de 26 a 45 anos que ingressaram na atividade há menos de três anos. Dos entrevistados, 75,8% estão em áreas urbanas, tendo a atividade como hobby. A espécie de abelha mais criada é a jataí (Tetragonisca angustula).
