Summary: Abstract:  Farming is greatly affected by weather and extreme events. This study aims to characterize the excessive rainfall event in September and October 2015, caused by El Niño Southern Oscilation, and evaluate crop losses in the Upper Valley of Itajai’s River in Santa Catarina, South of Brazil. Structured questionnaires were applied to obtain detailed information on the economic losses in the major crops of the region. The most affected crops were onions, tobacco, corn, rice and beans. The losses of onion and tobacco represented 55% and 7.5% of the entire state production, respectively.

Os objetivos deste estudo foram caracterizar o evento de excesso de chuvas em setembro e outubro de 2015 causado pelo fenômeno El Niño e estimar as perdas agrícolas na região do Alto Vale do Itajaí, em Santa Catarina. Foram aplicados questionários estruturados aos extensionistas sobre as perdas econômicas nas principais culturas agrícolas da região de estudo. As lavouras mais prejudicadas foram cebola, fumo, milho, arroz e feijão.
