Quality in day care centers: a multiple case study in Portugal

Resumo: Taking as a starting point the need to invest in the continuous improvement of the quality of Portuguese institutional environments for children in their early years, we present the results of a multiple case study, conducted in two day care centers with distinct characteristics. The objective was to understand the perspective of families and professionals about the quality of day care centers. The analysis of the data was based on the conceptual dimensions identified: organizational, environmental and relational. From these dimensions we identified gaps in the process of listening and interacting between professionals and families, considered fundamental for the dynamics of intersubjectivity that a shared construction of meaning on the quality of day care centers demands.

From these dimensions we identified gaps in the process of listening and interacting between professionals and families, considered fundamental for the dynamics of intersubjectivity that a shared construction of meaning on the quality of day care centers demands.  Tomando como punto de partida la necesidad de invertir en la continua mejora de la calidad de los ambientes institucionales portugueses para los niños en los primeros años de vida, presentamos los resultados de un Estudio de Caso Múltiple, realizado en dos guarderías con características distintas. El objetivo fue comprender la perspicacia de las familias y profesionales sobre la calidad en las guarderías. El análisis de los datos fue realizado a partir de las dimensiones conceptuales identificadas: organizacional, ambiental y relacional. A partir de estas dimensiones evidenciamos lagunas en los procesos de escucha y de interacción entre profesionales y familias, considerados fundamentales para la dinámica de la intersubjetividad que una construcción compartida de significado sobre la calidad en guardería implica.  En prenant comme point de départ la nécessité de s’investir dans l’amélioration continue de la qualité des environnements institutionnels portugais pour les enfants en bas âge, ce travail présente les résultats d’une étude de cas multiple, réalisée dans deux crèches ayant des caractéristiques distinctes. L’objectif est de comprendre la vision des familles et des professionnels sur la qualité des crèches. L’analyse des données a été faite à partir des dimensions conceptuelles identifiées; organisationnelle, environnementale et relationnelle. À partir de ces dimensions, nous avons observé des lacunes dans les processus d’écoute et d’interaction entre les professionnels et les familles, qui sont fondamentales pour la dynamique de l’intersubjectivité qu’une construction partagée de sens concernant la qualité en crèche implique.  Tomando como ponto de partida a necessidade de se investir na contínua melhoria da qualidade dos ambientes institucionais portugueses para as crianças nos primeiros anos de vida, apresentamos os resultados de um estudo de caso múltiplo, realizado em duas creches com características distintas. O objetivo foi compreender a perspetiva das famílias e profissionais sobre a qualidade nas creches. A análise dos dados foi realizada a partir das dimensões conceptuais identificadas: organizacional, ambiental e relacional.
